[FoMu.]

I went here a month or so ago with a real close friend of mine (and new Jamaica Plain Summer resident!)  I'm not really a huge coconut fan - I don't particularly enjoy the smell or taste, but I truly didn't mind the scoop of strawberry and the scoop of black raspberry that I had!

their philosophy is to be an alternative ice cream; meaning the whole vegan thing. Here's an excerpt from their site describing the philosophy behind their product

"It starts with coconut milk, a creamy and healthy base that is allergy- and vegan-friendly. We then sweeten it with agave and unrefined cane sugar, and add high-quality ingredients in fun combinations to create an eclectic menu of flavors. We churn it locally in small batches to ensure every scoop is as fresh and delicious as possible. Now even traditional ice cream lovers crave our non-dairy doppelganger."

Stepping into FoMu, I was greeted by the super friendly staff. They answered all of our questions, and were down to let us try practically all the flavors. Not to mention the minimalism vibe I got as well.

there's nothing better than grabbing ice cream with a friend, and strolling around the nearby area; sun shining, dogs barking, perfection.

Preface: I've worked in dairy (ice cream) for over five years; Rancatore's Ice Cream & Yogurt. I can pack a quart in under thirty seconds, I can take over 7 sundae orders at once, I can assemble a cake made entirely out of ice cream....so I think I'm qualified to judge here.

  • aesthetics: 8/10 - the store's aesthetics mirrored their take on iced cream: simple, refreshing, a lot stainless, wood, and earth tones.
  • taste:  7/10 - okay, so I'm not  a huge coconut fan, and although it was extremely refreshing I couldn't quite shake the coconut undertones. Strawberry masked/mixed well with the coconut base...black raspberry on the other hand, not so much that one.
  • scooping technique: 7/10 - nothing out of this world. He made sure to pack the bottom flavor into the cone enough so it wouldn't be top heavy (scooping 101)
  • consistency:  7/10 - it was quite soft, and it melted fast (even in the AC filled store) but  it wasn't icy! the strawberry had real chunks in it (but not enough!)
  • service:  9/10 - both guys were extremely helpful! they gave us samples of anything we asked for, were the perfect mix of both witty yet informative, always a plus. Gave honest suggestions, and weren't at all fazed by the heat. (which is a pet peeve to all ice cream workers, I don't care how friendly we look. When you ask to try Vanilla, yet you come in every week, we start to wish you'd develop an intolerance to lactose.)

keep it appetizing.
