I wasn't really a huge fan of the whole cupcake craze but I'd be lying if I said I didn't buy over a dozen (not all from the same place of course). If there's once place that could reel me back in it's Bird Bakery.
The moment you step inside you're instantly drawn in by the decor and warmth. It's fun, it's fresh and it's definitely tasty. The color scheme is light and easy on the eyes, the whole place has somewhat of a vintage feel to it with the wood and antique-esque decorations.
There are a ton of cutesy sayings on the walls, but nothing over emasculating either (there were a lot of guys hanging out in there, for cupcakes).
I think one of the things that initially drew people to Bird was the fact that it was started by Armie Hammer's wife, Elizabeth Chambers. For those who are unsure who Armie is he's the actor who played the Winklevoss twins.
There were so many interesting treats! Not to mention they had a pretty stacked lunch (real food) menu as well.
I took advantage of the free mini cupcake via Four Square check-in and was thoroughly impressed with my decision of Chocolate Salted Caramel. It was the perfect amount of sweet for me, and would highly recommend if you want something balanced.
I'm not gunna do a full review because I only sampled one itsy bitsy cupcake. So here's an itsy bitsy review instead, ha!
- aesthetics (includes packaging) : 9.5/10 - the list of cutesy coupling (ex: you're the peanut butter to my jelly) on one of the walls made my inner-tomboy come out a bit but other than that everything was spot on. The mini cupcakes came in an egg carton, granted you had to by half a dozen, but still. Like I said before the vintage-fresh theme was spot on from the shade of the wood to the handwritten signs.
- taste : 8/10 - the salt was subtle, but not invisible, and overall really really balanced. The chocolate cake could've stood to be a bit more "chocolatey" but overall it was a solid bite.
- moisture : 10/10 - Bird prides themselves on never selling day-old or discounted product and as a result of their strict mantra they bake each cupcake they sell every morning to ensure that the customer is getting the freshest product every. damn. time.
- frosting to cake ratio : 9.5/10 - I got a mini so it's pretty hard to mess this one up, but spot on guys, bravo.
keep it sweet.
